Dear Readers:
This should reach you just
as I’m flying away for the first leg of a summer book tour that will
continue into September. I’ll spend the rest of July in Texas and
Oklahoma and then fly back to the northeast where I’ve got appearances
scheduled for the Hamptons, the Hudson Valley, New England, western New
York, and right here at home in the New York City suburbs. You can find
all my appearances listed at the end of this newsletter, and follow me
on Facebook and Twitter for updates on television appearances, an upcoming NPR interview, print media, blog tours, and giveaways.
I’ll be signing my newest thriller THE PERFECT STRANGER
(HarperCollins, August 2014), which goes on sale next week wherever
print and digital books are sold. You can pre-order a copy from your
favorite bookseller or online retailer, or find it on store and library
shelves and available for download beginning next Tuesday.

Signing the first copies at Thrillerfest last week |
RT Bookreviews Magazine
weighed in with an early four star review: “In a word: terrifying. The
author’s latest thriller combines a main character who quickly wins the
reader’s heart with tense drama that propels the story forward. The
well-plotted mystery features a particularly malevolent villain whose
actions will make readers think twice about relationships that develop
in cyberspace.”
To set the stage for THE PERFECT STRANGER, you can read my e-novella prequel COLD HEARTED and view my video trailer here:

This summer has been too crowded with writing deadlines and business
travel to allow for our usual family vacation, but I’ve loved having my
oldest son home from college and we did manage to sneak away to Vermont
to visit colleges with our younger son for a few days in June.

Our first glimpse of Chance the Cat |
We also had a little adventure that those of you who follow me on Facebook witnessed as it unfolded. One night in early June, we came home to find this enormously pregnant stray cat on our doorstep.
Mama Chance and her kittens converted my office to a nursery |
She was sweet and affectionate and starving—and made it clear she
wasn’t going anywhere. We fed her and tried unsuccessfully to find an
owner for a few days, keeping her safely indoors at night to protect her
and her unborn kittens from predators. We’ve never had pets because of
my husband’s allergies, but even he fell in love with her. By the time
the wonderful people at Community Cats,
our local rescue, stepped in a few days later, we’d decided she was
destined to be our cat. Because my husband and sons are working all
summer and I’ll be traveling, we weren’t equipped to keep her and her
impending brood just yet. She was with Community Cats when she delivered
a healthy litter of six adorable kittens.
We faced a harrowing health scare soon after they were born when
she came down with a life-threatening bacterial infection, but we got
her the emergency medical care she needed and she and the kittens
survived and are thriving. My wonderful friend Laura and her family have
stepped in to offer the feline family a foster home, so that’s where
they’ll stay until my summer travels are over and the kittens have been
weaned.
A basketful of romping, snoozing cuteness |
After that, Chance will come home to us and most of the kittens have
eager families lined up to adopt them. A happy footnote: on the day I
brought Chance and the kittens home from the urgent care, she checked
out the whole house, then methodically moved the babies one by one from
our living room to this cramped corner beside my desk in my office.
Mama Chance and her kittens converted my office to a nursery |
It’s as if she already knows where I happen to spend nearly every
waking hour when I’m home, and she was making herself comfortable so
that she can become my constant companion and my muse. So don’t be
surprised if you find yourself reading about Chance and her brood in a
future novel. Just saying....
I’ll be in touch again soon with more news and a tour update.
Meanwhile, I’d love to see some of you during my travels, so be sure to
