Movie Night: Trouble With The Curve

Review:

Trouble With The Curve

A daughter tries to remedy her dysfunctional relationship with her ailing father, a decorated baseball scout by helping him in a recruiting trip which could be his last.

I doubt it needs to be said that any movie with Clint Eastwood in it is going to be a good movie the man's career speaks for itself. This being one of my personal favorites and one of his best in my opinion.

There are a million reasons why I rated this film five stars and why I can sit down and watch this movie then hit the replay button just to watch it all over again without ever getting tired of it, and yes, I do think this was one of Timberlake and Adam's best roles as well.

I must give them credit because if it weren't for how believable their acting was then I wouldn't have felt so moved or connected to their troubles.

But more than Eastwood and Timberlake's acting Adams really grabbed me from the beginning of the film all the way through to the end. I connected to her characters struggles in a personal way that effects me every time I watch this movie.

My heart is captured by her and my own history during her journey with her father (Eastwood) as they struggle to find a way to meet in the middle and open up to one another and eventually uncover the buried history that took place in her childhood.

Its more emotional than I expected it to be but its a great film and it will be one that I will always enjoy every time I see it.

You're Under Arrest (Manga) Full Series Reflection

Review:

You're Under Arrest!: The Wild Ones - Kosuke Fujishima

The story revolves around Natsumi Tsujimoto and Miyuki Kobayakawa, two female members of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and the protagonists of the show as they are stationed at the fictional Bokuto Police Precinct located at Sumida, Tokyo. The series is largely episodic, and much of it focuses on the interaction between the main characters and the humorous supporting cast.

The majority of the series take place in the Greater Tokyo Area. However, the site where the Bokuto Police Station is supposed to be does not exist in the Sumida Ward. In reality, the Bokuto Hospital takes its place.

Most of the series reflects on the standing friendship between Miyuki and Natsumi as they deal with their personal lives and their jobs as police officers, with some being portrayed as slice of life stories. The series also reflects the human side of Bokuto Station's various police officers in their field of work and in their personal lives outside of police work.

The English version of the manga was published by Dark Horse Comics, which only contained selected episodes from volumes 6 and 7 (reportedly at Fujishima's request, resulting in continuity confusion by some fans of the series

My Review:

Japanese Manga consists of around 80 "files" while the Dark Horse translated Manga's are written including 8 issues before being discontinued.

As a fan of the original 4 piece OVA series none of the following movies, sequel shows or manga's really felt genuine to the original cast personalities story lines or its purity.

The mangas and sequel films were too polluted by lesbian sexual innuendo, sexual ignorance, they were false shells of the casts previous personalities.

Miyuki was made to appear dumb witted and emotionally unstable in the mangas while in the OVA's she's kind hearted and brilliant and Natsumi in the original while being a bit of a wild child was brave, she was strong and fiercely loyal, in the mangas she was flaky, emotionally vacant, and self serving.

While I don't mind the whole F/F thing the truth is both Miyuki and Natsumi had men in their lives that they cared about and neither of those relationships seemed to be the focus despite the fact that Miyuki eventually gets married to Ken and Natsumi goes on to have her relationship as well. Instead they hint that while balancing their police jobs they spend a lot of time in female orgies and bickering over Miyuki's dependency on Natsumi and Natsumi's controlling their involvement. Its bizzare.

The You're Under Arrest I remember was free of any of that. It was light, it was funny, it emotional but it was innocent as well. None of this existed.

Even in the remake film when Natsumi returns from her journey through America Natsumi moves on with her life to achieve the career of her dreams but it never really compares to the OVA series or the mangas.

In the end the mangas just felt hollow and disingenuous. I didn't care for them at all. I'll keep my cutsey memories of the OVA instead. If you ever decide to check out the films I suggest the OVA series.

The OVA consists of the following episodes:

"And So They Met"

"Tokyo Typhoon Rally"

"Love's Highway Stars"

"On the road, AGAIN"

I also suggest watching the Japanese subtitled version to the English version. I've never been a fan of translated anime editions.

Falling by Jane Green

Review:

Falling - Jane Green

When Emma Montague left the strict confines of upper-crust British life for New York, she felt sure it would make her happy. Away from her parents and expectations, she felt liberated, throwing herself into Manhattan life replete with a high-paying job, a gorgeous apartment, and a string of successful boyfriends. But the cutthroat world of finance and relentless pursuit of more began to take its toll. This wasn’t the life she wanted either.

On the move again, Emma settles in the picturesque waterfront town of Westport, Connecticut, a world apart from both England and Manhattan. It is here that she begins to confront what it is she really wants from her life. With no job, and knowing only one person in town, she channels her passion for creating beautiful spaces into remaking the dilapidated cottage she rents from Dominic, a local handyman who lives next door with his six-year-old son.

Unlike any man Emma has ever known, Dominic is confident, grounded, and committed to being present for his son whose mother fled shortly after he was born. They become friends, and slowly much more, as Emma finds herself feeling at home in a way she never has before.

But just as they start to imagine a life together as a family, fate intervenes in the most shocking of ways. For the first time, Emma has to stay and fight for what she loves, for the truth she has discovered about herself, or risk losing it all.

My Review:

Falling had potential somewhere I just couldn't really find it. The whole book from beginning to end didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. What drove the characters was lost on me, the journey they were on, to the clipped ending never won me over or convinced me to care about what was taking place.

There is some potential in the story but I think it needs a lot of development and more feeling before it can truly fulfill me as a reader. There was just too much that felt robotic, too numb and unfeeling despite how emotional its all supposed to be.

Loving a Lawman (Cattle Creek #1) by Amy Lillard

Review:

Loving a Lawman (A Cattle Creek Novel) - Amy Lillard

Sheriff Seth Langston is head over heels for local wild child Jessie McAllen and has been for years. The trouble is she has eyes only for Seth’s rodeo star brother, Chase. Even though he considers Jessie his girl, Chase is an incorrigible ladies’ man with a wandering eye and no chance of settling down soon.

Jessie is ready to move away from Cattle Creek to put her feelings for Chase behind her, but after she shares a white-hot kiss with Seth, things get a little complicated. Jessie realizes her heart should have been his all along. And in the face of sudden tragedy, they’ll discover if their newfound passion will tear the Langston men apart or make the family stronger than ever.

My Review:

Loving a Lawman is a romance I've read many times before in other books. Guy likes girl, girl marries sibling, infatuation continues but surprise, feelings are mutual.

There are a couple twists to the story and while I liked Seth more than I cared for the other characters Jessie eventually won me over a little bit.

I enjoyed the slow development of Loving a Lawman but I wish the development of the end relationship had been a little different. Despite that I really enjoyed reading this book. It was sweet, it was open hearted and well written.
