Review:
Behind the wheel, racing champion Zander Donavan is at the top of his game. But after too much excess in his personal life, he’s forced to step away. He needs to accomplish something all on his own—outside of his famous father’s shadow.
Getty Caster is running away from the abuse that clouds her past. She thinks she’s found the perfect escape—until she discovers a stranger in the beachside cottage she’d been promised. He’s undeniably sexy, but she’s there to heal. Alone.
Before long though, fighting with each other turns into fighting their attraction. And giving into desire sets off a chain reaction that has their pasts colliding. With an unexpected love on the line, can they overcome the fallout to build a future?
Getting the typical wounded bird/ victim role Getty creates routines to keep herself "safe" or to provide a "safe" feeling atmosphere for herself.
There are times Zander gets her need for space but at the same time he also pushes her buttons and breaks through her barrier "zone". You'll get what I mean by that when you read the book but there are moments when Getty has conflicts about measuring him up to others when its outside of sex, yet during sex she's totally clear on all counts on who is doing the touching.
At the same time Zander is also conflicted because he digs Getty and he struggles with his sexual attraction to her which causes a lot of tension obviously considering his own past, and you can see that during their sexual encounters that he can't seem to think with more than one brain at a time so there is conflict there for him.
Getty and Zanders relationship felt more sexual than emotional even though there is plenty of emotion that cause the two of them to push and pull eachother away and get redrawn to one another again.
I'm not typically a big fan of the whole wish-washy on / off bits but what do you do when you're hurt or you're afraid due to your past experiences? - Routine. You do your routine until you're back and the flare of attraction returns.
I wasn't sure how I felt about the changing points of views but in the end I felt more for Getty than I did Zander.
Down Shift is great for really kind of grasping that whole fear to open up, fear to trust, fear to hope and having to reach outside your comfort zone for love.
