Movie Night: Wild Horses

Wild Horses

A detective opens up a fifteen-year-old missing persons case and begins to suspect that the boy it belongs to was murdered - and that a local rancher was involved.

I remember there being a day when Robert Duvall was in all the best movies and I looked forward to seeing him on film but over the last few years his career seems to have taken a nose dive.

I'm not sure what's happened between now and when he filmed the movie Secondhand Lions (Which I loved) but many of the films he's put out since just don't really connect with me anymore. The Judge wasn't bad but it wasn't one of his greats, I didn't care for A Night in Old Mexico, Jack Reacher wasn't bad, but Wild Horses completely bombed for me.

I didn't connect with any of the cast members on an emotional level, I didn't see the point to anything that revolved around Sam outside the investigation, Maria and the family, or the extra plot lines. It felt as if it was just thrown in without purpose.

Most of the movie you are confused, bored and wondering what the point to it all is, while the rest of the time its blaring homo-phobic, anti illegal Latin American position is made glaringly clear.

Most of the movie is spent bashing gays/homosexuals instead of focusing on the murder mystery angle then you get a few seconds of Scott (Robert Duvall) throwing fits about getting investigated then goes back to gay bashing by yet more characters.

I was tempted to stop the movie fifteen minutes in just because I got so tired of all the gay bashing and the pointless plot lines but I stuck with it because as a past fan of Robert Duvall I was hoping that the film would somehow pull through for some grand finale or something.

It doesn't. It drags for the whole movie without much reason until you reach the last three for four minutes for a fizzled out truth reveal that lacks any emotional depth which is sad because while Duvall is giving his lack luster confession I couldn't bring myself to care about what the truth actually was anymore.
