Review:
Bring the Heat (Sugarland Blue #5) by Jo Davis
Captain Austin Rainey knows all too well that being a good cop sometimes means gaining some bad enemies. After his ex-wife is killed, he finds himself on the wrong side of the law, trying to prove he’s innocent of her murder. The last thing he needs is a distraction—especially of the irresistible female kind…
Medical examiner Laura Eden has always found Austin more than a little intriguing, but she’s kept her feelings under wraps. Now she’s determined to do her job and clear his name—but as her investigation brings them into close proximity, she can’t deny the attraction between them—or resist the temptation he presents.
But Laura and Austin soon realize their budding feelings might be more than emotionally perilous. Someone is coming after everyone Austin holds dear—and Laura might be the next one in the line of fire…
My Review:
I think what I liked the most that I'm sure a lot of people won't is the whole pregnant ex/wife angle. Sounds worse than it is but the reason I liked it so much was that it added realism to the book. The fact that Austin is in the falling out of love phase with his current relationship and in the falling in love with Laura phase while his ex is carrying their child is something that you find does occur in the real world. Reality hits plenty of couples in the real world when there is a baby on the way and many people feel obligated to stay with their pregnant partners because of babies and many couples have babies to save relationships when things are on the rocks. Its a topic that can be debated and argued over but in the end you know that Austin isn't a bad person and we as readers can't just judge him because of the baby thing. There is so much happening in this book that it adds to all the multi dimensional story lines Davis has juggled from the beginning of this series. There were a few things I felt were lacking which brought my rating to 4 stars instead of 5 but Davis has been able to take on several issues at once and weave them together perfectly.
My Rating:
4 Stars
