Movie Night: The Magnificent Seven (2016)

Seven gunmen in the old west gradually come together to help a poor village against savage thieves.

The Magnificent Seven could have easily been a five star film with all the action packed sequences, the actor portrayals and everything however considering the Magnificent Seven has always been considered a hero series that's the area it was lacking most.

It had no heart at all. There was no reason for rooting for the hero until the last few minutes of the film but by then the reason to celebrate was over.

The vengeance thing we could have rooted for the entire time was gone -  for both the hero and the viewer- leaving both feeling more than a little deflated after all that build up.

Like seriously talk about killing my need to cheer at the end of the film which dwindled to a sad memorial sequence that leaves the rest of the film feeling a little pointless.

Still, I enjoyed the bangs, the booms, and all the gun fighting so why not?

In the end I think that's the only thing that bothered me was that for a film so explosive it felt completely hollow without much purpose.

However if all you want is non stop mindless fight scenes this is your film.

Movie Night: No Escape

Review:

In their new overseas home, an American family soon finds themselves caught in the middle of a coup, and they frantically look for a safe escape from an environment where foreigners are being immediately executed.

I know a lot of people who didn't like this movie, they bashed it for racial and political issues and unrealistic scenes and what not but I just wanted to sit back and enjoy the movie so setting those issues to the side I discovered that Owen Wilson is an actual actor!

Wilson is playing a role where he's cast for something that doesn't make him the butt of the films joke.

Sure, he's not an action hero kind of actor - that's not his strength. However that's not what his role is meant to be anyway. That's what we have Brosnan for. Sort of.

But that's what makes this so great, is that you can believe that Wilson is a father in a desperate situation trying to save his family.

I really liked that Wilson's role was actually serious for once because he's more than just a ridiculous comedy film side kick. He has depth, he has possibility, he has talent. I liked what I saw.

I thought that No Escape was exciting, it was suspenseful, and well worth the watch.

Hard Hitter (Brooklyn Bruisers #2) by Sarina Bowen

Review:

As team captain and enforcer, Patrick O'Doul puts the bruise in the Brooklyn Bruisers. But after years of hard hits, O'Doul is feeling the burn, both physically and mentally.

He conceals his pain from his coach and trainers, but when his chronic hip injury becomes too obvious to ignore, they send him for sessions with the team’s massage therapist.

After breaking up with her long-term boyfriend, Ari Bettini is in need of peace of mind. For now, she’s decided to focus on her work: rehabilitating the Bruisers’ MVP. O'Doul is easy on the eyes, but his reaction to her touch is ice cold.

Ari is determined to help O'Doul heal, but as the tension between them turns red hot, they both learn that a little TLC does the body good.

I would have rated this book possibly with five stars if I hadn't already felt like I've read this book before by another author recently.

While minor details are different from what I read before it just felt too similar to me to focus on what made this book and its characters different from the other book I read.

I still loved the friendships and the interactions and Hard Hitter was a great read that I'd recommend to anyone it was just too much like another one I've read for me to really enjoy it as much as it deserved.
