Mayhem (Dr. Thomas Bond #1) by Sarah Pinborough

A new killer is stalking the streets of London’s East End. Though newspapers have dubbed him ‘the Torso Killer’, this murderer’s work is overshadowed by the hysteria surrounding Jack the Ripper’s Whitechapel crimes.

The victims are women too, but their dismembered bodies, wrapped in rags and tied up with string, are pulled out of the Thames – and the heads are missing. The murderer likes to keep them.

Mayhem is a masterwork of narrative suspense: a supernatural thriller set in a shadowy, gaslit London, where monsters stalk the cobbled streets and hide in plain sight.

I absolutely love this cover art. Its fantastic on the hard back book. Its the art more than the blurb that drew me to this book in the first place. Yes, I judge books by their covers guilty!! guilty!!! but I'm okay with that.  Heh. I upvoted this book because I couldn't decide between three or four stars but I needed a refresh book with something like this so I went with the four. Its earned enough. The only thing that particularly snagged me was the pacing of the book which was a little frantic at times
but I still thought this was a great book.
There are a few things like this being the first book in the Thomas bond series, secondly when I read the blurb of this book I think I assumed it was only a ripper like murder mystery but readers also get a supernatural / horror twist that comes along with it.
While the dual ripper thing plays well with the period and the killings something about it didn't quite fulfill what I think built itself up to be. Still this didn't take away from the book as a whole the supernatural angle just didn't quite mesh all the way through. All in all Mayhem was a decent read and worth the buy.
