Red Queen (The Chronicles of Alice #2) by Christina Henry

Review:

Red Queen (The Chronicles of Alice) - Christina Henry

The land outside of the Old City was supposed to be green, lush, hopeful. A place where Alice could finally rest, no longer the plaything of the Rabbit, the pawn of Cheshire, or the prey of the Jabberwocky. But the verdant fields are nothing but ash—and hope is nowhere to be found.

Still, Alice and Hatcher are on a mission to find his daughter, a quest they will not forsake even as it takes them deep into the clutches of the mad White Queen and her goblin or into the realm of the twisted and cruel Black King.

The pieces are set and the game has already begun. Each move brings Alice closer to her destiny. But, to win, she will need to harness her newfound abilities and ally herself with someone even more powerful—the mysterious and vengeful Red Queen.

My Review:

I am so totally adding the first and second book of this series to my print collection. The Red Queen is fantastic. I wish I'd read the first book but if you haven't this installment  doesn't prevent you from being able to follow along.

I love Henry's writing, and I love the new take on the adventures of Alice - The Red Queen is on the level of Jayne Slayre, Pride and Prejudice Zombies and Abraham Lincoln Vampire Slayer.

Red Queen is dark, its gritty but its also surprisingly deep and a tad bit poetic. I found myself getting emotionally entangled in Alice's struggles and the exploration of herself as she often reflected on the difficulties of embracing this new self while standing on the precipice of adulthood as well as the road blocks she faces.

Alice is a character that you find often reflecting and debating on who she is, has been, and is becoming and spends a lot of time trying to understand this world she is caught up in and how to navigate through it.

There are quite a bit of life lessons you find interwoven through the entire thing but its no less exciting, thrilling and very beautifully worded.

I very much enjoyed reading the Red Queen from beginning to end. If you haven't read it I highly suggest it.
