Movie Night: Appleseed: Alpha

Review:

APPLESEED: ALPHA

Based on the comic book by the creator of Ghost in the Shell, a young female soldier Deunan and her cyborg partner Briareos survive through the post World War 3 apocalyptic New York in search of human's future hope, the legendary city of Olympus.

Alpha is on a whole different level than ExMachina, Appleseed and XIII, but its the same search for Olympus story line that you find in the other films yet for me this story works. Although the voice acting is a bit sub par I love the digital art which is fantastic, I also like seeing Deunan not looking like a 12 year old.

Her relationship with Bri is one that isn't him just "baby sitting" her but treating her like a partner that he can work with and can hold her own. Which I thought was great.

It sucks though with the plausible open ending that you're left wanting the continuing story but it won't happen for a long time because its creator would have to change the rest of his films that evolve around this world and for those that know he's still caught up in Ghost in the Shell's development, so it won't be happening anytime soon.

On its own I think Alpha is great, as part of the on- going Appleseed films it falls a tad short but its fun and I really liked Bri more than I usually do. Even more than I loved him in Ex Machina which is saying a lot for me.

I actually liked the English version more than the Japanese version this time around (mostly because David Matranga's voice is so delicious) but both versions are good.

Appleseed Alpha is available in both English and Japanese with subtitles.
