Movie Night: The Last Witch Hunter

THE LAST WITCH HUNTER

The modern world holds many secrets, but by far the most astounding is that witches still live among us; vicious supernatural creatures intent on unleashing the Black Death upon the world and putting an end to the human race once and for all. Armies of witch hunters have battled this unnatural enemy for centuries, including Kaulder, a valiant warrior who many years ago slayed the all-powerful WITCH QUEEN, decimating her followers in the process. In the moments right before her death, the Queen cursed KAULDER with immortality, forever separating him from his beloved wife and daughter. Today, Kaulder is the last living hunter who has spent his immortal life tracking down rogue witches, all the while yearning for his long-lost family. However, unbeknownst to Kaulder, the Witch Queen has been resurrected and seeks revenge on her killer, leading to an epic battle that will determine the survival of mankind.

My Thoughts:

The Last Witch Hunter is fantastic without knowing why it was fantastic however I had an issue with its limited development. It felt like the creators didn't believe in it enough to give the movie the full development it deserved during its production.

There are rumors that Summit plans on filming a sequel to the film because of its cliff hanger ending but because of its low ratings during its stint in the theaters the projects been put on hold.

I had two particular issues with the movie that stood out above the lack of development. One is that Diesel was still coming out of mourning for Paul Walkers passing and his acting had taken a hit (which was apparent in the last Fast and Furious movie)

I didn't think Diesel was the best choice for the role however he grew on me despite the fact that he was low par for the part.

The second issue I had was that after the poor box office ratings Summit scrambled to create more development on their website for the movie after the fact by adding more information about the witches, the brood, and more by including a contest event they held for fans through Deviant Art.

Day late and a dollar short.

The movie failed to explain the powers and its levels, what that meant, they failed to fill in the stories and the roles of characters that are on either side of the good and evil battle, and why they're so important to what is taking place, and why each one is chosen in the movie.

My feelings are that the Summit would have been better off had they made a prequel movie, a tv series, a comic or book series heck even a web series would have sufficed to establish the world before they released this movie so that viewers would have been given a fully developed movie without so many unknowns.

The Last Witch Hunter has so much potential to be a giant franchise instead it barely simmered and died before it got lukewarm.

I still hope that Summit will go through with the sequel and will take advantage of everything they left undone in this film but I don't really see it happening.

In the end I feel like The Last Witch Hunter will be one of those films I like without having much reason to like it besides its simple potential.
