The Perfect Hope
Nora Roberts

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts introduces you to the Montgomery brothers—Beckett, Ryder, and Owen—as they bring an intimate bed-and-breakfast to life in their hometown.
Ryder is the hardest Montgomery brother to figure out—with a tough-as-nails exterior and possibly nothing too soft underneath. He’s surly and unsociable, but when he straps on a tool belt, no woman can resist his sexy swagger. Except, apparently, Hope Beaumont, the innkeeper of his own Inn BoonsBoro…
As the former manager of a D.C. hotel, Hope is used to excitement and glamour, but that doesn’t mean she can’t appreciate the joys of small-town living. She’s where she wants to be—except for in her love life. Her only interaction with the opposite sex has been sparring with the infuriating Ryder, who always seems to get under her skin. Still, no one can deny the electricity that crackles between them…a spark that ignited with a New Year’s Eve kiss.
While the inn is running smoothly, thanks to Hope’s experience and unerring instincts, her big-city past is about to make an unwelcome—and embarrassing—appearance. Seeing Hope vulnerable stirs Ryder’s emotions and makes him realize that while Hope may not be perfect, she just might be perfect for him…

Dear Reader,

I love the “stranger in a strange place” trope and have used it in several of my books. When I started my latest, WHERE THE HORSES RUN (out July 1st), I wanted to see what would happen if I sent an ex-lawman-turned-wrangler, and his Native American friend to Britain to buy English Thoroughbreds and Hanoverian Warmbloods to take back to Colorado. I learned right off that Texans don’t always transplant well, and Cheyenne Dog Soldiers don’t adjust at all…especially to the overdressed, rule-bound English society of 1871, where wandering through private forests is frowned upon.

If ever two men are out of their element in Victorian England, it is these two. Their efforts to adjust to such a different culture makes for interesting—sometimes funny, sometimes harrowing—situations.

For one thing, no Southwesterner tolerates constant drizzle and overcast skies. Or having to dress in fancy clothes just to eat supper, or being expected to address titled gentlemen as “my lord”. On the “up” side, after time spent in the Scottish Highlands, Rayford Jessup—who grew up in cattle country—learns a new reason to dislike sheep and the food made from them (haggis), while developing a fine appreciation for the highly touted “water of life” (Scotch whisky), and learning a whole new way to cuss.

But his biggest challenge is using his gift with horses to help a damaged Thoroughbred, while battling a growing attraction to the animal’s owner, a wealthy Englishwoman who is desperate to save her injured horse and build a new life for her and her illegitimate son.

A relationship between the two of them would never work: they come from such vastly different worlds. Rafe is a wrangler—Josephine has enjoyed a life of privilege, and now has a chance to elevate her son from bastard to future-baron, by agreeing to an arranged marriage with the man who ruined her. Why would she settle for a simple life in Heartbreak Creek, Colorado?

With love in the air, anything can happen and dreams might come true. But first, Rafe has to help her traumatized stallion learn to cross water again, and then the horse has to win a high stakes steeplechase race…assuming he and the Cheyenne warrior can avoid being hanged or transported to Australia for poaching.

Thanks for stopping by and reading my ramblings. I’d love to hear from you on facebook or drop me a line at And if you would like to read more about Heartbreak Creek, Colorado, check out the Runaway Brides Novels, and this new series, The Heroes of Heartbreak Creek, and be sure to let me know if you like the “stranger in a strange place” trope, too.

All the best,
~Kaki Warner

Dear Reader,

Hope this newsletter finds you well — and up late savoring a delicious, summer-worthy, sigh-inducing romance (my latest have come from Juliana Gray, Kate Noble, and Sherry Thomas — all especially sigh inducing!). Funny that while we escape the rigors and routines of real life, at least for a little while, as we head to the pool, the beach, or even just the front porch, most of us seem to crave an even deeper kind of escape — the kind we find in a really, really good book.

Don’t get me wrong; I always love losing myself in a fabulous new read, no matter the season. But there’s something about summer that makes this desire to abscond into the world of daydreams a little — okay, a lot! — more potent. I remember devouring books by the dozen during the long, lazy summers of my teenage years; as an awkward and deeply introverted kid, there was no higher Heaven than Darcy’s ardent admiration and love for Lizzie Bennett, or Rhett’s dogged courtship of Scarlett O’Hara.

Maybe that “something” about summer has to do with falling in love; experiencing our own Sandy and Danny story (minus the Greasers and Pink Ladies, though I confess I had the biggest crush on Kenickie for years). While I never had a real-life summer romance, I fell in love over and over again — not only with the romances I read, but with the heroes in these books. Sexy, broken, daring, tall, shyly adorable — I loved ‘em all, and still do.

While summers are a lot less lazy these days, I still make time to indulge in that craving for escape; in that craving for a no-holds-barred, super sexy, searingly romantic love story, one that gives me butterflies and keeps me up and night and makes me feel, in short, like I’m falling in love.

I’ve found that falling for the heroes in my own books — no matter how rakish, or impossible, or broken — has made me a better writer. I fell hard for the hero of my upcoming debut, THE GENTLEMAN JEWEL THIEF. William Townsend, Earl of Harclay, the thief for whom the book was named, is as handsome and rakish as they come. But when his fascination with his daringly determined adversary, Lady Violet Rutledge, turns into something deeper, Harclay shows a softer side even he didn’t know existed.

And man, did I love that softer, gentler, more generous side — I hope you will, too! No matter where your summer takes you, I wish you happy reading, and all the butterflies and late nights that come with summer lovin’.

THE RED BIKINI (by Lauren Christopher)
Dear Reader…

So I wrote a romance with a surfer as the hero. …

A lot of people looked at me askance when I said I was doing this, or nodded and gave me a polite “uh-huh.” But I could tell everyone thought it was a tough sell. A surfer? Heroic?

Saving cats? That’s heroic. Saving children? That’s heroic. But surfing on the beach all day just doesn’t seem like the makings of a hero in any way.

But perhaps that’s partly why I picked him. …

I had wound-up, thirty-five-year-old Giselle as my heroine — a divorcee from Indiana with a small child in tow and a list of Excel spreadsheets in her head — and somehow I just thought a young, 28-year-old surfer would put her on edge in every way. (It does.) And I thought it would challenge everything she thought was “set” with her life. (She needed a little shake-up.)

I knew readers would have their preconceived stereotypes of the laid-back, surfer “beach bum,” and knew those stereotypes would mirror Giselle’s. So I thought it would be fun to bring down the stereotypes for everyone! Living here in Southern California, I knew the stereotype no longer existed. My husband, a career peace officer, was learning to surf past the age of 40, and we had a new longboard and a short board in our garage. My boss, who works with Google analytics all day, has been a surfer since he was about 15. My COO gets his surfing “sesh” in early in the mornings. My friend Grace surfs, alongside her hubby and their three small children. So I just thought it would be fun to bring this hobby — and its varied, unique participants — alive.

But then I began learning more about the $6 billion industry that surfing is — and the more I learned, the more fascinated I became. I followed the ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals ) World Tour (their largest competition) for the two years I was writing the book, and got so into the different surfers and their different personalities. In any sport, what becomes most fascinating to watch are the backstories involved — what athletes will give up and why, what led them to this drive and why, and what the sport keeps them from doing. And if it keeps them from falling in love, why do they give that up?

All of those became questions for my hero, and I plucked a few answers out of real stories from the ASP tours and gave them to my hero Fin, deciding to make him not just a surfer, but a surfing professional. I watched documentaries and read articles about the pros, and soon I could see all the heroic actions of this industry coming to the surface: their conservation efforts (surfers are almost always stewards of the ocean), the conflict between the “soul surfers” and the competitive surfers, the great things surfers did for each other, their compassion, their community. I wanted to bring all of this alive for the reader, and break down stereotypes for readers and Giselle.

Surfing is a beautiful ballet on the ocean, and — even at its most competitive level — it’s a curious mix of competitiveness and complete bow-down to Mother Nature. It’s fun, sexy, intriguing, and heart-stopping all at once. I hope readers will come along for the ride and check out THE RED BIKINI this summer!

THE WHISKY LAIRD’S BED (by Donna MacMeans)
Dear Readers —

THE WHISKY LAIRD’S BED is a story of unexpected passion between two people with a seemingly impassable barrier — the issue of Temperance. I really had to work to bring both individuals to common ground on this one.

You see, my heroine, Claire Starke, is something of a firebrand. The abused daughter of an often-drunk renown photographer, Claire understands the evils of alcohol and is working diligently to eradicate them from London. Such work is interrupted when she rushes to Scotland to save her best friend from the clutches of a Scottish laird whisky distiller. She hadn’t anticipated encountering an intriguing, handsome man in a kilt who labels her temperance beliefs ridiculous. He challenges her far more than she cares to admit. When her friend is injured, Claire remains in the laird’s castle until they both can safely return home. Claire feels anything but safe with temptation assaulting her around every corner.

Macpherson has his hands full with saboteurs at his distillery, a mother who champions the wrong woman for marriage, and constant guilt concerning his twin brother’s death. He didn’t need this undeniable attraction to the very woman who’d like to see him out of business, and who works diligently to accomplish that very goal. She needs a good seduction to scare her back to London, yet contrary to his purposes, he is the one seduced.

I shall always be grateful to THE WHISKY LAIRD’S BED as through writing it, I discovered Scotland: beautiful mountain valleys, deep inviting lochs, bagpipes, men in kilts, musical brogue, and intoxicating whiskies — what’s not to love! We traveled to the Highlands specifically to get it right for the book. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did in the writing.

ROUGH AND TUMBLE (by Crystal Green)
Dear Reader,

So a woman walks into a bar…

Okay, we’ve all heard variations on this one before, but when I decided to write about a down and dirty saloon on the outskirts of Las Vegas, there was one story I wanted to tell above the rest.

What would happen if a woman—the button-up type—walked into this dive-y biker bar and caught the lusty attention of a charismatic, bad-boy, hot-rodding gambler?

Many good girls (including you?) have had this basic fantasy before because, really, what would you do if this heart-melting guy started hitting on you and sending your hormones into overdrive, even though you knew you shouldn’t be anywhere near him? And—just to take this to the next level—what if it just so happened that one of the friends you were with accidentally lost you in a poker game to Mr. Oh-So-Very Wrong?

That’s where ROUGH AND TUMBLE, the first book in my new series, takes off. Most women wouldn’t accept the indecent proposal Cash Campbell ends up offering the heroine, Molly. But that’s the fun in reading a naughty summer romance like this—we can let ourselves go and experience the joy of freedom, just like Molly does!

After this book, look for DOWN AND DIRTY in October, then a third Rough and Tumble romance in 2015. All of them center around this same seedy bar in the desert, where men with rugged edges hang out and get women all hot and bothered. And if you visit Vegas anytime soon, you might even want to stop by the Pioneer Saloon in Goodsprings, Nevada, which served as my inspiration for this series.

But, like the fictional Rough and Tumble saloon, beware of what happens after dark, when the really dangerous men show up…

Hope you enjoy Cash and Molly’s adventure!

All the best,

~Crystal Green
